Black Walnuts

We have black walnuts.
When they fall onto the garage, it sounds like Paul Bunyan is throwing rocks at us. Then they roll down- clumpety clumpety clump- onto the road. I had to clear the road of the walnuts because they were creating a hazard. Eating them looks doable, though a bit time consuming:

Mushrooming for Mushrooms' Sake

I went mushrooming over the weekend, but I didn't pick any. I just took pictures.

We already have enough mushroom to eat, so there was no real point in picking them, but I enjoyed the hunt. I'm also still quite shaky in my mushroom knowledge, and picking any would require extensive research before I would actually eat them.

So, I photographed them. The following are my photographs, with an explanation of what I think they probably are.

The first one is most likely Chicken of the Woods. This is the only one I almost picked. It's rumoured to be absolutely delicious. However, I am not well versed on it, and am mostly taking BAH's word for it, which is not actually good enough. I require that we are both absolutely certain of the identification before dining. I like that it grows in our woods, though, especially if it ever lives up to the hype:

The next is a possible Puffball, but too small to be certain:

This one is a pair of brown puff balls. These are good enough to pick, except that we just picked two gigantic ones already:

The next is a puffball gone to spore- most definitely too late to eat:

Nearby is a puffball gone to spore, broken on top so you can actually see the purple spores:

And then, lastly, is this beauty:

I have no idea what it is. :)

And the award for 'Best Selfies' goes to...

I just recently "liked" Richard Simmons on Facebook. Best move of my life.
"Can you believe it's already October?! Time to start planning our #Halloween costumes....."

"Don't fence me in!"

"Round 'em up cowboy!"

"Beautiful in Blue!"

"Have a happy day! xoxo"

The last one is my favourite. xoxo

Found

Two Giant Puffball Mushrooms:

They were on the edge of the forest. I waited patiently for BAH to come home so that we could cut through them together and see if they were any good, and lo and behold:

Perfect!

Our mushroom book says that if you find a puffball mushroom, you have to drive around town and show everyone this giant mushroom you found! And I found two! So, I posted them to facebook:

My giant puffballs. Cheesy, I know.

Does anyone know any good recipes?

Pumpkins

Trillium Natural Foods in Mount Horeb is selling our pumpkins! I love it! I was trying to sell them at our house, but the only people who come by are the mailman, the UPS man, and the Fed Ex man. The Fed Ex man bought one. He said,

"You should really get these up in Mount Horeb. They're unique."

So, I asked Becky at the Co-op, and she said okay.

Little Z grew some, too: her sweet pie pumpkins. Not bad for a six year old.

I feel especially comfortable in natural foods markets. I like sweets, and I know they're supposedly bad for you, but I feel like, if I buy my sweets at a health food store, then it's okay. Right?

Anywho, I love growing pumpkins, and now we are actually selling them at a real store. Holy cow! What next?

Social media puts a stop to government shutdown!

Just kidding.

So, the federal government has now shut down, and... nothing is happening around here. How about in your neck of the woods?

In America, if they really want to get our attention, they should shut Facebook down. And Twitter. And that other thing. Social media crisis! That would be something.

I don't personally know any adults who act as childish as our "leaders".

So, as usual, the Onion comes to our rescue with the most accurate description of our predicament:

If Congress is unable to pass legislation that will fund the government by midnight tonight, the U.S. government will shut down. Here is what a government shutdown means for you:

* All national parks and zoos will be closed, but animals will be fed and cared for by Sens. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA)

* No trash collection in Washington, D.C., which means the only solution is for residents to eat their own garbage

* Those who died and are honored in the Holocaust Museum will become de-memorialized and will no longer be resting in peace

* Old man with giant beard who walks hundreds of steps to light the gas lamp in the Statue of Liberty every night will be unemployed

* You will still be able to send and receive mail, but any attempt to poison government officials will have to be held off until they return to their offices after the shutdown ends

* This probably won’t have any actual effect on your marriage, but it’s better to blame it on this than facing what the real issues are

* Any harm that may occur to you during the shutdown will still affect your body in real life. Essentially, if you die in the shutdown, you die for real.

* Most government workers will be furloughed—a procedure that involves halting their pay, sending them home, and then castrating them with a gelding knife in front of their spouses

* Realistically, you won’t be affected by this very much in your day-to-day life, but you’ll feel the full effects during the 2014 midterm election when you lose your seat in Congress

Haunted

This book is the most vile thing I have ever read. I feel like my self of two weeks ago was pure as a newborn lamb, and now I am filthy, because I have read half of this book.

I am still reading it because my Books and Booze club is reading it, and I hate to go to a meeting unprepared.

The plot is pretty simple. It resembles Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None in its set-up: several people are gathered together in a building, sealed off from the rest of the world, and one by one, they die. That's pretty much where the similarities end. Everyone in the story has a strange or disgusting habit. In my Books and Booze group, someone said that the third chapter made her vomit. I chuckled, thinking I was a tough cookie and I would never vomit from reading a book. Well, I didn't actually vomit, but I would like to take a break from the filth of Haunted and watch Pink Flamingoes while languidly perusing the collected works of the Marquis de Saude.

Chuck Palahniuk can't be all bad, because he did write Fight Club. Maybe this book is supposed to be a satire, but I'm just not getting it.
