I substituted for a teacher's aide in a 2-3 classroom today. The assignment for the children was to graph the average monthly high temperatures of a U.S. city. This is what one student turned in:
I love it, purely on its artistic merit. A beautiful graph, no? It's like modern art.
I think that's a pretty good use of a pie chart. I clearly see most of the hear occurs in summer and not much heat is in winder. That's thinking out of the box.

ReplyDeleteYes, the pie is out of the box. This student has a definite future in the FOD's Bureau of Misleading Data Representations.
ReplyDeleteIt's rather nice, isn't it. Also, like B&B I feel that this graphic representation tells me all I need to know. I would have preferred if the colours were more seasonal though.
ReplyDeleteJust yesterday I was suggesting to some bigwigs that a fancy audit report use the scale 0 to 100%, and not 0 to the mythical 110%.
I especially like the fact that this kid spelled Albuquerque correctly, but "tempatures" instead of "temperatures."
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a great fan of the spelling error on the easier word. And, the more I look at it, the more it does make sense to me, as a reasonable graph. Strictly speaking, she did fulfill the qualifications of the assignment, no?
ReplyDeleteI really hope they measure tempature in degrees Fahrenheit. Otherwise Albuquerque may be experiencing some problems.
