I few years ago, I read all of Frank McCourt's books. I got this impression from them that Irish houses didn't even have kitchens when he was growing up. They ate bread and boiled vegetables a lot in those books.

I don't know why, but this reminds me: have you read Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann? It's set in America, but it's by an Irishman, and it's gorgeous. I have been meaning to pass it on- do you want me to send it to you?
